Fire officials are investigating the cause of an early-morning fire that broke out inside a senior citizen high-rise in Newark’s North Ward, officials said.
According to preliminary reports, firefighters were dispatched to 58 Evergreen Lane around 2:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire inside the multi-story building.
Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from the stairwell and alarms indicating flames inside an apartment on the 10th floor.
Firefighters quickly located the source of the fire and were able to extinguish it in under 15 minutes. One female resident was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
The Newark Housing Authority responded to the scene to assist residents and assess any building damage. No other injuries
