HAMPTON, Va. — Several families are without a home after a fire tore through part of a Hampton apartment complex early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 2 Secretariat Lane around 1:30 a.m. for reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from an apartment building. When crews arrived, flames were pouring from the roof and balcony.

Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum said the intensity of the fire forced crews to immediately call a second alarm to bring in additional firefighters.

“When crews arrived on scene, they had heavy smoke and flames showing from the roof and the balcony,” Chittum said. “The fire had already vented. The crews saw the amount of fire and the number of units impacted and immediately called a second alarm.”
