NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The North Charleston Police Department issued a public reminder Tuesday that wearing masks in public is illegal under a South Carolina law.

The reminder comes as the agency said more individuals have been seen wearing ski masks and 'Pooh Sheisty' style masks as a fashion trend.

The law, filed under South Carolina State Statute 16-7-110, prohibits anyone over the age of 16 from wearing a mask that conceals their identity in public spaces, unless specific exemptions apply.

According to the statute, exceptions to the mask prohibition include wearing masks as part of holiday costumes, for physical safety in certain trades, during theatrical productions or masquerade balls, and during civil defense drills or emergencies.
