Rattled London-area school board trustees – both public and Catholic – are lobbying to save their jobs in the wake of a directive by Ontario’s education minister to do away with an “outdated” governance system.

Education minister Paul Calandra told the CBC last month he will have a plan to get rid of school board trustees “100 per cent” by year’s end as part of a system-wide revamp known as Bill 33.

Calandra’s press secretary Emma Testania told The Free Press that Calandra “has been clear” about his intentions.

“The current school board governance structure is based on an outdated system that needs to be modernized,” she said. “Our focus is to provide students with better outcomes, and teachers and educators with the tools they need to help students succeed.
