Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo are seeing drops in international student enrollment this fall semester due to tougher visa rules.
Current policies on immigration with the U.S. government have caused an initial pause in visas and interviews.
International enrollment for the fall semester at BGSU this year was 590 students compared with 896 in the fall of 2024, a reduction of 34 percent.
International enrollment at UT this fall was 1,370 compared to 1,461 last year at the same time, a drop of 6 percent.
The change from 2024 to 2025 is due to modifications to the federal government’s student visa application process, including a nearly monthlong pause in applicant interviews earlier this year, leaders at both schools say.
