The U.S. Coast Guard is backing off a controversial plan to remove hundreds of navigational buoys in New England waters.
In an Oct. 21 press release , the Coast Guard said it was suspending the Coastal Buoy Modernization Proposal, which initially called for removing more than three dozen buoys in Rhode Island waters.
The Coast Guard noted that it received over 3,200 comments from mariners and said that it plans to conduct "further analysis" of the region's buoy network.
