C handler Unified School District is taking a number of steps to improve safety on its nearly four dozen campuses. The district’s Governing Board was given an update of some of the new steps at its Oct. 8 meeting.

Among them are adding an investigative officer inside the human resources office to look into any complaints and appointing one on-site prevention liaison on each campus.

“Not only are we looking at the things that we do, from the how we keep our campus safe from people trying to come onto our campus, but also internally, how do we care for all of our kids so that they feel safe coming to our campus?,” said Michael De La Torre, the district’s assistant superintendent of PreK-12 operations.

De La Torre said that there were 128 threats assessed during the 2024-2025 school year.
