COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina Department of Social Services is issuing guidance as the ongoing government shutdown could threaten SNAP benefits for almost 260,000 South Carolinians who rely on the program.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a warning on Oct. 10 that the government would be unable to fund SNAP benefits for November if the shutdown is still ongoing. DSS was also instructed to hold all SNAP issuance files until further notice.
The federal government has been closed since Oct. 1 due to ongoing disputes over funding.
Other processes related to SNAP, such as benefit recertification, new application approvals and card issuances could also be prolonged because of the shutdown.
