DULUTH — The remaining ramps on the Twin Ports Interchange and Blatnik Bridge will open early Friday.

Motorists will, for the first time since 2021, be able to drive on the ramps connecting U.S. Highway 53 and interstates 35 and 535, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The ramps linking Garfield Avenue and the Blatnik Bridge will also open Friday.

The yearslong project, a replacement of the so-called "can of worms" interchange, includes safety and traffic flow improvements and can better handle heavy freight, MnDOT said.

"This marks the end of major construction on the Twin Ports Interchange," MnDOT said in a news release Wednesday.

All that's left to do is landscaping and cleanup work, which is set for 2026.
