COLUMBIA — Columbia city leaders and The Loop Community Improvement District are taking a closer look at how to make Business Loop 70 safer for people walking, biking or driving.
A pedestrian safety ordinance was introduced at a Columbia City Council meeting Monday. If approved, the ordinance will restrict people from standing or walking on medians where the speed limit is greater than 30 mph or where daily traffic exceeds 15,000 vehicles.
It would also apply to medians less than 6 feet wide, which includes most intersections along Business Loop 70.
The proposal comes as The Loop CID conducts a safety audit focused on motorcyclists, school-age children, pedestrians and other vulnerable groups.
"When the City Council introduced this ordinance, we came out in favor of it," The Loop
