Sky News can reveal a formal complaint was lodged with Victoria's Education Department after the granddaughter of a high-profile Olympian failed to qualify for a sports competition after placing behind a transgender student.

It comes as an investigation by the network has uncovered growing concern among parents about radical gender policies in childhood athletics.

Emily – whose family asked for her last name not to be used – is the 11-year-old granddaughter of Olympian Faith Leech, who aged just 15 swam alongside Dawn Fraser in the first Australian women’s swimming team to win an Olympic gold medal in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay at the 1956 Games in Melbourne.

Leech also won bronze in the 100m women’s freestyle, behind Fraser and their Australian teammate Lorraine Crapp.
