ASHEVILLE - Few remain in temporary housing through the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Tropical Storm Helene, as the agency expects most to have moved on to temporary housing by the end of March 2026.

In Buncombe County, Helene destroyed the homes of 199 homeowners and 179 renters, according to a FEMA presentation given to the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Oct. 21, but over 8,700 survivors received housing assistance. In total, that assistance was worth more than $75 million, according to FEMA, as more than 8,900 Buncombe County homeowners required habilitability repairs.
