ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) --The City of Isle of Palms is addressing first responder wage adjustments.

The city has launched a wage study that could lead to salary increases for police officer and firefighters.

City leaders say the initiative is aimed at improving retention as other Lowcountry municipalities look to raise their own pay rates.

Isle of Palms Council member Blair Hahn said a wage increase recognizes the risks first responders take daily to protect their community.

"We had a shooting out here two years ago, one first responder charged live fire. The man was with a gun shooting at the police officer," said Hahn. "Well, if you're going to exhibit that type of bravery and you're going to protect the citizens of this island, you deserve a working wage."
