BUFFALO, N.Y. — It was called Mental Wellness in the Construction Industry, a webinar featuring experts put together by Spectrum Health and Human Services.

The discussion was based on troubling statistics in the construction industry

According to the Centers for Disease Control , an estimated 6,000 construction workers died by suicide in 2022. Around 1,000 died from construction accidents in 2022.

Celia Spacone, coordinator of the suicide prevention coalition of Erie County, said "that same trend is playing out in Erie County. In 2023, we lost seven. It was the highest industry. We lost seven individuals to suicide in construction, and then 10 in 2024."

The construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates among professions, according to experts tracking the numbers.
