Transport for NSW was aware of overcrowding on the South Coast line when it ordered new trains with fewer seats, according to a report from the NSW Audit Office.

The report added that issues with the procurement process led to cost increases because of the need to lengthen platforms and buy more carriages.

The office has released its audit of rail rolling stock procurement, which includes the Mariyung fleet - previously called the New Intercity Fleet (NIF) - due to arrive on the South Coast line next year.
