CLEVELAND, Ohio — Mayor Justin Bibb is asking Congress to help Cleveland close Burke Lakefront Airport, a formal step that could accelerate the city’s long-talked-about plan to close the airport to redevelop the downtown waterfront.
In a letter sent Wednesday to U.S. Senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted, U.S. Rep. Shontel Brown and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Bibb urged federal partners to support the city’s efforts to decommission Burke and reclaim roughly 450 acres of lakefront land to be redeveloped and opened to the public.
It’s an important step because with federal help Cleveland can avoid a long, arduous process that is usually needed to close airports like Burke.
Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne joined Bibb in signing the letter and mentioned during his Sta
