Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has pulled away from a debate with Deputy Nationals leader Kevin Hogan on the government's proposed new environment law.

Environment Minister Murray Watt released draft legislation last week which would see an overhaul of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act to streamline approvals.

Ms Hanson-Young said the laws did not go far enough to secure protections for Australia's native forests.

She argued destruction of natural habitats would endanger native species such as the Koala and instead suggested Australia source its timber through plantations.

But the Nationals MP quickly jumped in and shut the suggestion down.

"Hardwood you can't," Mr Hogan told Sky News host Pete Stefanovic.
