URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) – OrSense -- a new device now available in Urbana -- is replacing the way people are screened to donate.
The pre-donation screening checks a person's hemoglobin levels, a protein in the blood. In the past, a donor's finger was pricked to check if they were eligible to give blood.
“But now we are able to do it without the finger prick," said Public Relations Manager of Impact Life Kirby Winn. “Of course, you're still going to have a needle to complete the donation and fill that blood bag. But the pre-donation finger prick is a thing of the past as of this week.”
However, with the OrSense scanner, blood is not drawn until medical professionals are certain that your blood can be safely donated.
