The UK Government’s decision to allocate Scotland less than 8% of a new £360m fund for fishing communities is “wholly unacceptable”.

Scottish Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon said the decision was a “disappointing departure” from efforts to reset relations between the governments at Westminster and Holyrood.

She said Scotland represents a majority of the fishing capacity in the UK.

In a letter to her UK counterpart, Dame Angela Eagle, Gougeon said the funding settlement was “nothing short of insulting” to fishermen north of the border.

Earlier in the week, the UK Government announced the Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund to “modernise and revitalise the UK’s fishing fleet”.

Scotland has been allocated £28m from the 12-year, £360m fund – a share of 7.78%.
