An individual was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train Thursday morning in suburban University Park.
According to conductors onboard the train, the individual was riding a bike near the intersection of Governor's Highway and Stuenkel Road and attempted to cross the tracks near the University Park Metra station just before 8 a.m. local time.
The inbound City of New Orleans train, heading northward toward Chicago’s Union Station, hit the individual and applied its emergency brakes, according to crew.
The individual was pronounced dead on the scene.
An investigation is underway, and the train is stopped near the station. University Park police are on scene, along with Amtrak personnel.
