GRAND JUNCTION Colo. (KREX)- Stargazers are in for a treat this week as the Orionid meteor shower reaches its peak — with a rare appearance of Comet Lemmon. The celestial show promises bright streaks of light across the night sky from midnight until dawn, offering some of the best viewing conditions of the year.

“It’s a really exciting time, especially this week, because it’s a new moon phase,” said Catherine Whiting, associate professor of physics and astronomy at Colorado Mesa University and a researcher with the Grand Mesa Observatory. “It’s perfect for observing. Normally, this time of year, we have meteor showers happening and there are actually seven of them right now. One of the most prominent is called the Orionids.”
