COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolinians will have the opportunity to safely dispose of unused or expired medications this Saturday during the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is encouraging residents to participate in the nationwide event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offers drop-off locations across the state for secure disposal of prescription drugs.
According to the DEA, nearly half of all abused prescription drugs come from family or friends, often from home medicine cabinets. State data show that 2,157 drug overdose deaths occurred in South Carolina in 2023, a 6.1% decrease from the previous year. Of those deaths, 1,982 were linked to prescription drugs , accordin
