A man exploited his teenage victim's desire to be part of a family in order to assault her, leaving her ashamed and unable to participate in everyday activities like swimming, a court has heard.

"I cannot forget how I begged you to stop," the young victim said in an impact statement read to the ACT Supreme Court.

"I hope you feel disgusted with yourself."

On Thursday, October 23, the girl in her early teens recounted how the assault by Graeme Leslie Herbert left her feeling extremely lonely, caused her to lose friends and "absolutely destroyed" her self-esteem.

"I felt very grateful to have met you, and then you traumatised me," she said.
