The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission announced Thursday that the black bear shot and killed in Newton County in the wake of a deadly attack on a camper was not in fact the bear responsible for the camper’s death.

Max Thomas, 60, of Springfield, Missouri, was apparently killed by a bear while camping at Sam’s Throne Recreation Area in the Ozark National Forest. His body was found on Oct. 2.

On Oct. 4, authorities located and shot the bear that they believed had killed Thomas. Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said at the time he was “extremely confident” it was the same bear, based on photographs Thomas had taken of a bear near his campsite. Since then, we’ve been awaiting the result of DNA testing to confirm that assumption.
