NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KCAU) — North Sioux City initially was a meeting place for Native Americans. The area was developed with European-American settlement after the Lewis and Clark expedition passed through in 1804. Omaha, Yankton, Dakota, and Ponca tribes all gathered in the area.

It was first settled by Joseph La Plant in the 1840s. North Sioux City wasn't incorporated until 1951.

In about 1863, this area, just southeast of the current McCook Cemetery and between the Big Sioux and Missouri Rivers, became a gathering spot for troops from Iowa and Nebraska; an area known as Camp Cook.
