GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — 1.4 million people in Michigan are a week away from losing their food assistance benefits, known as "SNAP".

Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture directed the state to stop the November benefits because of the federal government shutdown.

Many of those affected are families with children, senior citizens and people with disabilities.

“It's so important that our families, our children, continue to have these SNAP benefits so that healthy food can be accessed, especially at a time where we continue to see inflation in the grocery stores,” says Kids Food Basket president Bridget Clark Whitney.
