Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant is likely to succeed incumbent Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on November 24, as the government has initiated the process to appoint a new Chief Justice.
According to news agency PTI, the government on Thursday, October 23, sent a letter to CJI Gavai seeking his recommendation for a successor to the top judicial post. The letter may be delivered later on Thursday evening or on Friday, October 24.
Chief Justice Gavai will retire on November 23 upon attaining the age of 65.
Under the memorandum of procedure for the appointment of judges, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court is elevated as the next CJI. Conventionally, the Union Law Minister writes to the outgoing CJI to recommend the successor, PTI reported.
