HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The statewide red flag warning is prompting emergency responders across the state to issue warnings of their own -- avoid outdoor activities that could produce sparks.
The combination of strong winds, low humidity and dry brush can cause even a small spark to grow into a fast-moving fire in minutes, which is why officials want the public to take the red flag warning seriously.
Officials are urging residents to be vigilant and do their part to protect themselves and their properties.
“We’re not expecting people’s lives to shut down. it’s really that heightened awareness that fire conditions are very rich for a fire that can grow fast and big, and more so than usual,” said state fire marshal Dori Booth.
