ROSWELL, N.M. —

A law enforcement response is underway after a possible hand grenade was found at a home in southeast New Mexico.

The Chaves County Sheriff's Office said it responded to a home on North Atkinson Avenue after the possible explosive was found. The caller said it was found when he was cleaning the property after being recently purchased.

The caller also said he wrapped the hand grenade in duct tape to keep the pin and spoon pieces in place. Deputies were able to secure the area and await for state police to respond.

The New Mexico State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal is responding to the home.

The area will remain closed amid the multiple agency law enforcement response. The initial response started around 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23.
