Former Launceston mayor Danny Gibson says he won't re-contest his spot on the council at next year's local government elections.

Mr Gibson has sat on council since 2011, and is a former Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year.

He was elected as mayor in 2022 but stepped down the following year, saying media reports about his working with vulnerable people status were taking a toll on his mental health.

The ABC has previously reported allegations from young men in the theatre scene that Mr Gibson made unwanted sexual advances to them.

Following the publication of the allegations, Mr Gibson posted a statement on his personal Facebook page stating he had been "subjected to a coordinated campaign of character assassination", and would consider his future in local government.
