A man has been convicted of murdering his stepdaughter and her husband in a brutal attack that shocked the community. Derek Martin, 67, was found guilty of killing Chloe Bashford, 30, and her husband Josh, 33, after a violent dispute over money.
The court heard that Martin bludgeoned Bashford with a hammer multiple times, fatally injuring her in her own home. He then grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her eight times as she lay on the floor. After killing his stepdaughter, Martin lay in wait for her husband to return home. When Josh arrived, Martin chased him upstairs, stabbing him four times before strangling him with a belt.
Following the horrific acts, Martin attempted to clean the scene of the crime. He then picked up the couple's four children from school and took them to McDonald's for a meal. After dropping them off at their grandmother's house, he turned himself in to the police.
Body cam footage from the police station captured the chilling moment Martin confessed, stating, "I've killed two people." Although he admitted to the killings, he claimed he was suffering from a serious mental disorder at the time and denied the charges of murder.
After five and a half hours of deliberation, a jury at Brighton Law Courts found Martin guilty of both murders. The families of the victims reacted with gasps as the verdicts were read. Martin remained impassive throughout the proceedings, showing no visible emotion.
He is scheduled to be sentenced in November, facing a potential life sentence for his crimes.
