At 80 years old, Nelson Bradbury didn’t expect a late-night text to make him an internet sensation.
It all started when Nelson and his wife drove past a ballfield in Newfoundland, Canada, and spotted a sign asking for new players. He decided to stop — and never looked back.
Eleven years later, Nelson still suits up every week alongside players who have become family.
One night, Nelson woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t shake thoughts of the next game. So he sent a text message that would soon touch millions.
"I have been laying in bed for the past half hour thinking about tonight's game and thinking about the great bunch of guys I am allowed to play with," the text reads. "I don't know if I will get another year in the league or not. But I do know, this will be the year of ball play I will remember. All because of 14 great people."
