An Edmonton police weapons analyst stepped onto the witness stand in court on Tuesday and carefully pulled a black handgun from a secure case.

One by one, Const. Erik Tolley held up four semi-automatic handguns — each empty of any ammunition — that were used in a fatal mass shooting more than three years ago.

The guns, equipped with prohibited over-capacity magazines, were matched to more than 60 cartridge casings found littering the sidewalk outside the now-closed Ertale Lounge on March 12, 2022. Police seized each of the weapons after they were thrown out of a car during a pursuit monitored by an Edmonton police helicopter.
