The latest decision by United States President Donald Trump to break off trade negotiations with Canada is Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cue to start investing in the country’s defence and mineral sectors, Quebec Premier François Legault said on Friday.

“The economic situation is very worrisome,” Legault told reporters at the National Assembly as he prepared to adopt special legislation to regulate the working conditions of Quebec physicians. “I looked at the export figures for Canada to the United States…there is a serious drop over the past months.

“Whether it’s Doug Ford or me, we are very worried about Canada’s economic situation.”
