A man who was arrested in a fatal 2019 stabbing has admitted to killing his cellmate in a separate incident in the Edmonton Remand Centre.

Clayton Berard, 44, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Thursday, partway through his first-degree murder trial in the death of Bruce Windsor.

Berard strangled Windsor with a bedsheet on June 29, 2019, the day after the 57-year-old sex offender was arrested and placed in the same protective-custody unit at the remand centre.

Windsor had served a previous sentence for offences related to child sexual abuse material, and court records show he had also been jailed for breaching court-imposed conditions meant to limit the risk he posed to children.
