There were less than 6,000 spectators at Ayresome Park on the only previous occasion Wrexham travelled to play Middlesbrough on Teesside.

It was the first round of the League Cup and David Mills scored both goals which gave Boro victory against their Third Division Welsh opponents. Boro were managed by Stan Anderson in what turned out to be his last season in charge and he fielded all of his big guns against Wrexham.

The team included the likes of Jim Platt, John Craggs, Stuart Boam, Willie Maddren and John Hickton, all of whom went on to form the nucleus of the great side led by Jack Charlton for the following four seasons. The victory against Wrexham was comfortable and earned Boro a second round tie at home to Spurs, which attracted more than 23,000 spectators.
