WACO, Texas — PFC Florencio Davila of Waco, Texas, served his country fighting in World War II, with his dying wish being to be buried with full military honors, but the government shutdown has threatened to take that away.

His family and the local community stepped up to make sure he would be honored as the hero he was.

A life overflowing with love and a legacy of service is how Davila's family described him.

"My dad was a person who cared about other people. He cared more about other people than himself," Irie Cuevas, Davila's son, said.

PFC Davila accepted the call to serve his country, sending him thousands of miles away from Central Texas.

"He was stationed in the Philippines. He was with the 632nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was a gunner in the tank," said granddaughter Sonya G
