THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A 16-year-old Bronx high school student was detained by ICE agents during a mandatory, routine check-in at 26 Federal Plaza, representatives from the New York Civil Liberties Union say.

The eleventh grader, identified only as "E.J.C.C." was detained on Thursday morning while attending the check-in at Federal Plaza alongside his lawyer, according to the NYCLU. Representatives say E.J.C.C. and his counsel were directed to go to 201 Varick St. where he was then taken into ICE custody.

Since then, the 16-year-old has been held at a detention center in the Bronx while ICE seeks to deport him to Ecuador, court documents show.

“E.J.C.C. was doing exactly what the government asked by showing up to his ICE check-in and pursuing a legal pathway to citizenship," said Eli
