Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Police Department and the city Department of Neighborhood and Business Development are warning businesses to watch out for a scam involving fraudulent zoning invoices.
The fake bills have been emailed to at least three businesses in the city over the past couple of months, according to police spokesperson Kieran Coffey.
The fake notices instruct businesses to pay an approval fee, submission fee, environmental impact fee and final review fee via wire transfer.
The city will never ask a business to do a wire transfer of money for a zoning invoice - a helpful fact to remember when distinguishing between real and fraudulent invoices, Coffey said.
