Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have been “terminated” indefinitely, President Donald Trump announced late Thursday, because of a television commercial built around a 1987 speech by President Ronald Reagan. The spot got under Trump’s skin because it effectively makes the case against protectionism while illustrating how unmoored the Republican Party has become from what was once a conservative consensus about free markets.
