TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is behind bars for his alleged connection with a sexual assault that happened in Tempe years ago.

Raymond Swails, 38, was arrested by Tempe police on Thursday.

Details about the assault are limited, but police say the incident happened sometime in 2019 near the Loop 101 freeway in Tempe.

Authorities were made aware of the sexual assault on Jan. 28, 2019, when a victim reported what had happened. Police said that during the initial investigation, detectives explored all possible leads, but no one was arrested.

Five years later, on Oct. 17, 2024, the crime lab notified Tempe PD there was a match for the DNA found on the victim’s forensic nurse exam kit. The DNA found on the kit allegedly matched Swails’.
