This year, Michigan has seen more fatal crashes involving Amish buggies than in any of the past 10, according to state police crash data.

A months-long MLive investigation explored the numbers, the personal impact and possible solutions to reduce the number of tragic collisions.

MLive spoke with an Amish bishop, who sets rules for his community, a woman who lost her pregnant sister in a crash and other community members to gain Amish perspective.

Reporting revealed strong religious beliefs and long-held tradition play a role, not only in safety standards the Amish set but how they respond in the aftermath of crashes.

Amish who spoke with MLive said they treat the tragedies as the “will of God.” They don’t live in fear, nor doe they place blame on the drivers who hit them.
