MANCHESTER, Conn. — A police pursuit that happened overnight in Manchester ended when the driver and police exchanged gunfire on Interstate 84 west, and the driver was shot by an officer's bullet, according to Manchester police.

A Manchester police officer was on patrol at 1:42 a.m. Saturday, when they initiated a traffic stop on the 300 block of Center Street. The driver initially stopped the vehicle but then drove off, police said.

The vehicle got to the West Middle Turnpike entrance of I-84 west when police deployed stop sticks. The stop sticks slowed down the vehicle, but it continued driving onto the highway, according to police.

The driver started to shoot at officers pursuing the vehicle, and a Manchester officer returned fire, hitting the vehicle and the driver, police said.
