BOSTON —

A Massachusetts lawmaker is trying to cap the number of self-checkout stations available at grocery stores.

Democratic state Sen. Paul Feeney introduced a bill limiting grocery stores to eight self-checkout stations and requiring a staffed lane for every two self-checkout machines open.

One employee would also be required to monitor every two self-registers.

The bill also suggests hefty fines for stores that violate this ordinance.

President of the Retailers Association of Massachusetts, Jon Hurst, says the bill is short-sighted.

Some shoppers say, however, they like he convenience of self-checkout.

"I do self-checkout, I hate to say it," one shopper said.

Others say it's important for people to hold onto their jobs in this economy.
