A retired Australian National University School of Music teacher accused of raping a child student mocked his alleged victim and laughed at the accusations against him, according to police.

Vincent Gordon Edwards faced the ACT Magistrates Court for the first time on October 23 , when his identity could also be revealed.

He did not enter pleas to 20 charges, including sexual intercourse with a child under 10 years old and committing an act of indecency on a child under 10 years old.

In documents tendered on that occasion, police alleged the 87-year-old Tathra man did not understand the gravity of the allegations relating to his time teaching the primary school student in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
