Gunfire wounded 12 people in seven shootings scattered across the District on Friday night and early Saturday. Five of the people were hit near Howard University after a homecoming event, D.C. police reported.

The number of victims, including one as young as 5, appeared to mark the most violent night recorded in the city since a federal law enforcement surge began in August. One victim sustained life-threatening injuries, while investigators think other victims will survive their wounds, police spokesman Tom Lynch said.

The shooting near Howard had the largest tally of victims, among several other shootings that were reported in neighborhoods around the city late Friday. It was not clear whether any were connected.
