It was going to happen, and on Saturday it did. Although the day demonstrated many of the attractions of autumn, the temperature in at least part of the Washington area finally fell below freezing.

On Friday the low reading at Dulles International Airport, on the northwestern edge of the metropolitan area, had dropped to 33 degrees. But on Saturday morning the mercury plunged through the freezing mark and settled 2 degrees below it at 30 degrees.
