Your “Big Idea” editorial on regional police departments saving tax payer money is spot on, but developing an Allegheny Police Department is too big (“Big Idea: Allegheny County needs fewer police departments — or maybe just one?” Oct. 19). Your suggestion should be orchestrated through the COGs (Council Governments) of which there are eight.
But don’t stop with policing, go further with some fiscal sanity and include municipalities themselves. As an example: Any municipality under 5,000 residents has to consolidate with an adjacent community. This would be similar with what Harrisburg did with smaller school districts in the 50s and 60s. Tax money would be further saved.
