The Western football team’s once-promising season crashed to a halt in a bizarre, only-in-Canada, 18-17 first-round playoff loss to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday at Western Alumni Stadium.

The Mustangs blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead and suffered the ignominious death-by-rouge when veteran slot back Seth Robertson failed to run a missed 31-yard field goal out of the end zone as the clock expired in regulation.

Robertson, stopped in his tracks by 6-foot-5 Guelph freshman linebacker Ryan Tharby, tried in desperation to toss the ball out of the end zone but that still would have counted as a single point for the Gryphons.
