COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) announced that the South Suburban Reservoir, a longtime favorite for dog owners and outdoor enthusiasts, will remain closed indefinitely after recent maintenance revealed serious water quality problems.

For more than 20 years, the reservoir inside Stratton Open Space has served as an informal recreation area, particularly popular for off-leash dog walking and swimming during warmer months. However, CSU officials said the waterway was never officially approved for public use and that years of pet activity have left lasting impacts on water safety.

The reservoir was drained in April of last year for repairs. When crews recently refilled and inspected it, they discovered high levels of contaminants, including toxic algae and E. coli
